Metal Work
Metal department was established in 1865 as art-metal decoration in Sir J.J. School of Art and Industry under Mr. Higgins. In the early establishment, metal ornaments and sculptural mouldings were produced and supplied from this department. Due to ill health of Mr. Higgins the department was discontinued and reopened by Mr. Terry in 1876 where Kutch artisans were engaged to produce Kutch silver and Benares brass. By 1903, the department did copper, brass, silver engraving involving use of enamelling. Also Repousee, shaping and jewellery making were part of the same.
Post independence much impetus was given on the study of Indian metal craft especially Maharashtra rich tradition. Today the students are taught enameling, repousee and shaping and casting along with handling of other mediums in metal in order to create works of art and utility. Sir J.J. School of Art is proud to have a unique metal department, only dedicated graduation and post-graduation program in this field. Students are introduced to the various techniques of metal craft allied to industrial processes as well as some traditional techniques of embellishments. The course has been adapted to contemporary times by including product and lifestyle design methodologies that opens up wide spectrums for the students to pursue post their education.
